Non-beneficiaries: Mrs. Mowbray and the Family of George Chapman

As promised in the previous post, I begin the process of documenting the children of John Chapman. I start with a list of all those of his children mentioned in his will as well as his sons-in-law.

A search of the durhamrecordsonline.com website shows a series of baptisms, following the marriage of John Chapman and Mary Corpse on 16 May 1785 in Greatham (England, Select marriages 1538-1973), all at Hartlepool. Of these, Michael, Mary, George, and Elizabeth (i.e. the last four have mother's maiden surname as Corps or Corpse). The first five are also indexed in England, Births and Christenings, 1538-1975, and I include the baptism dates for these from this source.

Marked with asterisks are the Chapman siblings named in their father's will. Of those not marked, the first George must have died before 1804, when another child was baptized with the same name. There is a burial for George Chapman, aged 15 at St. Hilda's, Hartlepool in 1802, and this must be him. John Chapman is not mentioned in the will, and had probably died before 1836. There is a burial in Stockton 1832 for John Chapman aged 39, but this might also be for one of the Stockton Chapmans, of which a John Chapman was baptized in 1792. I could buy the record to find out, but as there are dozens of potentially interesting records, I will resist the temptation at this point!

Today's post will concentrate on daughter Mrs. Mowbray (who by elimination we may deduce to be Jane Chapman), and son George Chapman, who had died before 1836, but had surviving children. Mrs. Ann Stewart has a more complicated genealogical biography, which I will save for the next post.

A search of durhamrecordsonline.com for a marriage of Jane Chapman and John Mowbray gives one such in 1812 in Hartlepool. The following census returns all from Bedford Street, Hartlepool are for this couple and their family.

Given that the 1841 census requested ages above 15 years old to be rounded down to the nearest 5, the three ages 15 could indicate an age from 15-19 years old.

Thanks to corresponding genealogist, Susan, I learned that George Chapman had married Mary Yarrow, which record I found indexed at durhamrecordsonline.com for 1825 at Hartlepool. He had been buried in 1832, also at Hartlepool, aged 28. The following baptisms at Hartlepool are for their children (the search specified father George Chapman and mother Mary Yarrow), and also some Hartlepool burial records are indexed.

Although George died in 1832, his family may still be traced in census returns. In 1841, the widow Mary Chapman (age 38) lived with Jane (15), John (12) and Edward (9) on Sussex Street, Hartlepool. Their neighbors are Francis and Elizabeth Bulmer and their family, who are also mentioned in the will (Elizabeth is George's sister).

The Will of John Chapman

Hartlepool, from Finden, William (1840), The Ports, Harbours, Watering-places and Picturesque Scenery of Great Britain Vol. 1

In looking for the identity of Sarah, the wife of William Hughes, Baker of Unicorn Yard, Stockton and Durham Street, Middlesbrough, I purchased the transcripts for two marriages from durhamrecordsonline.com. When you order records they ask if you want your email address shared with others who have purchased the same records. Having clicked "yes", I was able to make contact with Susan, who sent me details of records confirming the following sequence of events:

       Sarah Chapman, daughter of John Chapman, married William Davison in 1807.
       William, a Fisherman, was drowned in 1813.
       His widow, now Sarah Davison married William Hughes, the Baker in 1816.

Previously, I had seen this sequence of events, unsourced on ancestry.com. Since my goal is to document my lineage, this was welcome information, which, of course, had me interested in John Chapman. As Sarah's father he could have been born around 1765, and might conceivably have lived into the era of civil records. I was surprised, however, to find through a search of ancestry.com, a record for John Chapman as late as 1873 in England and Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966.

I already had William Hughes, Innkeeper of Middlesbrough as a son of William Hughes, the Baker. Knowing there was a will, I ordered the same from the National Probate Office. This will be useful for many of John Chapman's descendants. John mentions eight children in this will, of which five were beneficiaries of the will, while John had already made provision for the other three during his lifetime.

Here is my transcription of the will, all seven pages, each of which is signed at the bottom by John Chapman. I have highlighted in yellow, his first mention of each of his children, and in blue for his sons-in-law. Following posts will document these children and their families in other records.

This is the last Will and Testament of me John Chapman

                                                                                                 of Hartlepool in the

County of Durham Gentleman made this second day of July

In the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty six

Whereas in regard that my Daughter M^rs. Mowbray and the

family of my late son George Chapman deceased by and in

consequence of a beneficial purchase made of me by my said son

and my son in Law John Mowbray of a close or parcel of ground

called Crofton Heugh are in better pecuniary circumstances than

the rest of my Family and in regard that I have already advanced

to my Daughter Ann Stewart more than her proportional share of

my estate and effects would amount unto it is not my intention to make

any provision by this my will for my said Daughter M^rs. Mowbray

or for the children of my said deceased son George Chapman or for my

said Daughter Ann Stewart or any of them By virtue of every right

power or authority enabling me in this behalf I do by this my will

executed by me in the presence of and attested by the three credible

witnesses whose names are hereunto subscribed as witnesses to the execution

hereof Give devise and appoint all my closes or parcels of ground

messuages Lands tenements and hereditaments situate lying and

being in or near Hartlepool aforesaid or elsewhere in the County of

Durham And all other my real Estate whatsoever and wheresoever

(except such real Estates as are vested in me by way of Mortgage or upon

any Trust or Trusts) unto and to the use of my sons in Law William

Hughes of Middlesbrough in the North Riding of the County of York

for the purposes aforesaid in the place of the Trustee or Trustees so

from time to time dying or desiring to be discharged or neglecting

refusing or becoming incapable to act as aforesaid And that

upon every such nomination as aforesaid the said trust estates

securities monies and premises shall respectively be conveyed and

transferred in such manner as that the same may be effectually vested

in such new trustee or trustees so to be appointed jointly with the

The Welsh Connection

Hand loom weavers - Hogarth Industry and Idleness (1747)

This is not, in fact, the first Welsh connection. There are Tilleys who moved to and lived in Abergavenny. There is an Evans who moved from Amlwch, Anglesey. This post takes us back a generation from William Hughes, Baker of Unicorn Yard, Stockton and Durham Street, Middlesbrough, whose family is reconstructed and documented in the previous post. William Hughes and his wife Sarah are my 4x great grandparents, whose daughter Jane Hughes married Joseph Strong, the steam tug master.

There are not so many Hugheses living in Stockton - or at least baptizing children there - around this time period, the 1820s. Aside from children of William and Sarah, England, Select Christenings also has baptisms of children of parents Ellis and Frances Hughes at St Thomas Stockton:

Prior to these baptisms, England, Select Marriages 1573-1975 has:
       Ellis Hughes and Frances Copeling 24 July 1823 Stockton Parish, Durham.

Which explains the name William Copland Hughes as derived from his mother's maiden name. Perhaps, my 4xgreat grandfather William Hughes, the Baker, and Ellis are brothers. This appears quite likely since durhamrecordsonline.com has a Unicorn Yard address for both the baptism and burial of Ellis Hughes in 1827, the same address as for William.

In addition, a search of durhamrecordsonline.com for records of children with last name Hughes 1780‐1820 makes this highly likely, with the following:

The survivors are William and Ellis. This is consistent with my hypothesis, by which Ellis goes on to marry Frances Copeling (or Copland), while William marries Sarah. The 1798 birth for William is also consistent with the Baker's later census data.

I bought the record for William Hughes, which reads:
       St Thomas, Stockton, Durham 8 Apr 1798 William Hughes, born 22 Jan 1798,
       2nd son of Ellis Hughes (weaver, native of Denbigh, North Wales) by his wife
       Mary Sigsworth (native of this parish)

Prior to these baptisms, durhamrecordsonline.com have this marriage record at St Thomas, Stockton:
       21 Jan 1796 Ellis Hughes, of this parish married Mary Sigsworth, of the
       parish of Norton.

I have not yet found a burial for Ellis. As to Ellis's birth, Denbighshire Parish Records, 1538-1912 offers five candidates for Ellis Hughes born between 1760 and 1780, and, of course, it's quite possible that there are unrecorded baptisms for Ellis Hughses. Without more information about the weaver from Denbigh, we will not get any further back.

On the other line of this marriage, there is an 1832 burial for a 64-year-old Mary Hughes in Stockton, Durham, who may be Mary Sigsworth of the marriage record. This would yield a year of birth about 1768, if her age is accurately recorded, although this is often not the case.

For Mary's birth a search of the durhamrecordsonline.com index reveals only one recorded Mary Sigsworth in the county of Durham who would be of age to marry in 1796.  And she is from a Sigsworth family residing in Stockton.  While it is possible that Ellis Hughes's wife came from outside Durham, all the trees I've seen place her in this family, that of Burdon Sigsworth and Mary Tate whose marriage is recorded in Stockton 24 December 1770. The following children of this couple are baptized in Stockton:

The above-mentioned burial for Mary Hughes, if for this Mary Sigsworth, and if her age were accurately remembered, would have her born 1768. Perhaps she was baptized later because the parents were not married until 1770. Or else her age at death is not accurate, or the records are not for the same person.

I would feel happier if there were a more certain connection between this Mary Sigsworth daughter of Mary Tate, and Mary Sigsworth who married Ellis Hughes, than name, geographical proximity and reasonable age. The 1798 burial record for James Hughes, son of Ellis and Mary, from durhamrecordsonline.com reads:
       3 Apr 1798 James Hughes, age: 1 year 6 months, died 1 Apr 1798, 
       son of Ellis Hughes by his wife Mary Sigsworth

The durhamrecordsonline.com website states that this record is transcribed from the Bishop's Transcript. From 1598 each parish was to copy its register for deposit with the diocese. In principle, there would be two copies of each record, although, of course, many have been destroyed through the years. Neither are the copies exact, with differing levels of information on each. The familysearch.org site has the following record from its England Deaths and Burials 1538-1991 index:

       age 19 / year of birth 1779 / parents: Ellis Hughes and Mary Cate Tynsworth

The burial date and names (partially, at least) mark this out as indexing an equivalent record to the Bishop's Transcript of James's burial. It's not much of a stretch to believe that the age has been mis-transcribed - perhaps because it is in years and months and difficult to read. The mother's name is then interesting because Mary Cate Tynsworth is likely a mis-transcription of Mary Tate Sigsworth. This record may be the parish copy, which is available on microfilm at the Durham Records Office, while the record from the England Deaths and Burials 1538-1991 index cites film number 1894159. At some time I should get to the Family History Center in town and order a copy of the film. Until then, this is what I have.

Proceding on the assumption that I have the correct Mary Sigsworth, her father Burdon Sigsworth's burial is recorded in Stockton 29 March 1789, aged 50, while his baptism, in England, Births and Christenings, 1738-1975, is at Stainton in Cleveland, on the Yorkshire side of the Tees. His parents are James Sigsworth and Mary Burdon, married 27 September 1739 in Stainton (England Marriages, 1538-1973).Their children baptized there are:
       Burdon Sigsworth 23 Nov 1740

       James Sigsworth 17 April 1743       
       James Sigesworth 17 January 1747/8       
       William Sigsworth 17 June 1750       
       Eliz Sigsworth 23 January 1753 

There is also a Joseph Sigsworth baptized in Stainton 16 Dec 1746, father given as Joseph, which, perhaps, should be James, the clerk confusing the son's name with the father's. I have seen this happen elsewhere. A 1746 baptism would thus fit neatly into the sibling series.

Thus I have 5xgreat grandparents Ellis Hughes and Mary Sigsworth; then probably 6xgreat grandparents Burdon Sigsworth and Mary Tate, and 7xgreat grandparents James Sigsworth and Mary Burdon.
